The Shoot
Birds off a tower, in ridge country that makes them harder.
The tower stands on a rise with the ground falling away from it. Pheasants come off it high and keep climbing, and the wind coming over the ridge does the rest — nobody gets an easy one.
Pegs are numbered round bales set in a ring at the bottom, out in the broomsedge and along the pine edges. You shoot from your peg, the dogs work the ground between drives, and the birds you don't get go on living out there.
It is a social way to shoot. Everybody is within sight of everybody else, there is a lot of standing about between drives, and the noise of it carries all the way back to the pavilion.
How the Day Runs
Arrive at ten. Shoot at eleven. Eat at one.
Guns gather at the pavilion, there's coffee and a safety talk, and then everybody rides out together. Shooting starts around eleven and runs through the middle of the day.
When it's finished the birds come back to the pavilion, and so does everybody else — a fire going, lunch on the table, and a long slow hour of people telling each other about the one that beat them.
Numbers, dates and price depend on the day and the size of your party. Give us a call and we'll build it around you.
Before You Come
What to bring, and what not to worry about.
Tower Day Notes
- Shells are yours to bring. Pheasants take more gun than quail — heavier loads and larger shot than you'd carry on a quail morning. Bring plenty; nobody has ever brought too many.
- Ear and eye protection. A tower line is loud in a way a walk-up hunt is not.
- Dress for standing still. You'll be at a peg in the open, not walking. Our shoots have run in snow and in fog.
- The dogs are ours. Labs pick the birds up; you don't need to bring a dog.
- A Georgia hunting license is required, same as any preserve day. See Plan Your Visit.
- Birds go home with you, cleaned and iced in a DanMar cooler.
Dates Each Season
